LONDON
21st September 2024 @ Genesis Cinema
on september 21, 2014, cecile hosted her first-ever film screening at the dalston rio, renting a screen out of pocket to create a community-driven experience. ten years later, on the same date, we returned—this time at genesis cinema in mile end, with support from bfi and mirror water.
this anniversary screening was more than a retrospective; it was an invitation to reflect on cecile’s body of work and engage in a broader dialogue about the evolution of art, film, and cultural production over the past decade. together, we explored the questions: how have our creative landscapes transformed since 2014? how have we grown as individuals and communities? who are we becoming, and who do we aspire to be? where do we imagine ourselves in 2034?
following the screening, cecile joined critic and writer simran hans for an in-depth post-screening conversation. the evening continued with a dynamic panel discussion and audience q&a featuring candice carty-williams, abraham adeyemi, jenn nkiru, and rianna jade parker. together, they unpacked the influence of cecile’s work and delved into powerful conversations around process, power and liberation.
NEW YORK
18th November 2024 w/ alfredas cinema @ WSA, NYC +
21st November 2024 @ Film Anthology Archives
cecile was honored to be hosted by alfreda’s cinema for two special events in new york city.
the first event marked a historic moment, as cecile became the first black/poc filmmaker to present work at the water street apartments (wsa). this intimate work-in-progress event offered an exclusive glimpse into her upcoming feature film no telephone to heaven, where she shared insights into the film’s development and creative process.
the second part of the retrospective took place at anthology film archives, featuring the same films previously screened in london. the screening was followed by an engaging conversation with melissa lyde and a lively audience q&a. together, we explored recurring themes in cecile’s work—including humor, spirituality, and chaos—and reflected on how these elements shape her unique cinematic language and storytelling approach.
ATLANTA
24th November 2024 w/ the tenth @ peter street station
for the first time, cecile was present in atlanta to screen her work as part of an intimate salon hosted by the tenth. the event featured a carefully curated selection of her films, followed by a rich conversation with curator clint fluker. the evening concluded with a focused and insightful q&a, offering cecile the opportunity to delve into key creative references for her upcoming feature film, the neuroscience informing sound design decisions in projects like strolling, and much more.
2025 & Beyond
as 2025 is underway, and 2034 seems far off but will likely sneak up just as quickly as 2024, cecile offers her reflections as she begins the second decade of her practice:
“the key concept that i’m beginning this second decade of my creative practice with in mind is first principles thinking. that is, the willingness to assess and tweak all aspects of the creative process according to what works, as opposed to what is standard or conventional. i’m excited to begin again in many ways. it’s not lost on me that many black women don’t make it this far in their careers. i almost didn’t. so i’m approaching the beginning of this next decade with curiosity and gratitude, deeply committed to working with both integrity and multiplicity.
i’m in complete agreement with tarkovsky when he says the artist has nothing to be proud of. i feel in complete servitude to the things that are growing within me and demanding expression, and i feel honoured to be trusted and allowed to steward them.
2034 seems so far off! but i hope by then to not only have established a body of work within the feature film and television space, but to also be in a position where i have created space for others to far exceed me in every way.”
